I'm Andrea Ryan a tutor, and a strategic consultant based in Richmond, Va. Through my experience as a tutor and teacher over the past 8 years I have developed a unique method and approach to tutoring that is effective as it is personalized and intended to facilitate long term changes for success well beyond time spent tutoring. I am guiding hand to my students, proactive collaborator with their teachers, and strategic consultants for their parents.
I believe that there are many ways to learn and understand a subject and that every student learns differently. As a tutor, my goal is to help each of my students to understand their learning style and feel confident in their approach to any subject they encounter. I see my role as a facilitator of achievement in every area of my students’ lives.
The primary focus of a first session is to get to know my student and establish rapport. This is very important to me because trust and understanding are essential to every aspect of teaching and meeting individual needs. Secondly, a dialogue takes place in order to establish goals and expectations for each other, so that we have a clear focus on what we will accomplish during our sessions. For example, if I meet with a student for SAT prep, I look at previous scores and determine with the student the specific score that he or she would like to have. This “goal score” is determined by gathering information about average scores of accepted applicants to the Universities or colleges that my student wishes to attend. Then I would provide a diagnostic test for my student which we will take together. After scoring the test, I spend time going over questions that were troublesome for my student. The purpose of this is to get a full understanding of my student’s way of thinking in a standardized test environment so as to cater to my student’s unique learning style.
I like to help my students discover things that are interesting to them in the material they are already learning. I believe that in every reading assignment or essay question, there is some aspect of the material that can be relatable and relevant to any student. It’s just a matter of finding what motivates and excites each student and then helping them find their own unique connection to it. The key to becoming an independent learner is to fall in love with curiosity and the boundless applications that any subject can have in your own world, by discovering its unique relationship to your own personal genius.
I would help them find an interest in the subject they are studying. Staying motivated comes naturally when you can find an interest in what you are studying. I believe this is a twofold process: first, finding the purpose and importance of the material on an intrinsic level, and secondly, making a connection to its meaning and value in your own endeavors.
Moreover, I always encourage students to think outside the box. A change of mindset and a creative approach could mean the difference between viewing the material as a tedious assignment or as an adventure into the boundless areas of the human perception. Personally, I have found that no matter how dull an assignment may seem, there is always a connection or insight that I make relevant to me or my perspective that excites me.
I strive to vary my teaching style to meet the learning needs of individual students. I have received high-performance reviews for my ability to creatively make complex topics manageable. My strategic and energetic approach to teaching allows me to establish rapport with my students quickly. The combination of my unique approach as an instructor, and experience working with students college preparation have made me a strategic and effective tutor. Most importantly, I care about every aspect of my students’ well being and have a personal investment in their success in academia and life.
I aim to provide exceptional value by identifying and addressing the real issue(s) from the beginning.
