FAQs

What is your teaching philosophy

I believe that there are many ways to learn and understand a subject and that every student learns differently. As a tutor, my goal is to help each of my students to understand their learning style and feel confident in their approach to any subject they encounter. I see my role as a facilitator of achievement in every area of my students’ lives.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The primary focus of a first session is to get to know my student and establish rapport. This is very important to me because trust and understanding are essential to every aspect of teaching and meeting individual needs.  Secondly, a dialogue takes place in order to establish goals and expectations for each other, so that we have a clear focus on what we will accomplish during our sessions. For example, if I meet with a student for SAT prep, I look at previous scores and determine with the student the specific score that he or she would like to have. This “goal score” is determined by gathering information about average scores of accepted applicants to the Universities or colleges that my student wishes to attend. Then I would provide a diagnostic test for my student which we will take together. After scoring the test, I spend time going over questions that were troublesome for my student. The purpose of this is to get a full understanding of my student’s way of thinking in a standardized test environment so as to cater to my student’s unique learning style.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I like to help my students discover things that are interesting to them in the material they are already learning. I believe that in every reading assignment or essay question, there is some aspect of the material that can be relatable and relevant to any student. It’s just a matter of finding what motivates and excites each student and then helping them find their own unique connection to it. The key to becoming an independent learner is to fall in love with curiosity and the boundless applications that any subject can have in your own world, by discovering its unique relationship to your own personal genius.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help them find an interest in the subject they are studying. Staying motivated comes naturally when you can find an interest in what you are studying. I believe this is a twofold process: first, finding the purpose and importance of the material on an intrinsic level, and secondly, making a connection to its meaning and value in your own endeavors.

Moreover, I always encourage students to think outside the box. A change of mindset and a creative approach could mean the difference between viewing the material as a tedious assignment or as an adventure into the boundless areas of the human perception. Personally, I have found that no matter how dull an assignment may seem, there is always a connection or insight that I make relevant to me or my perspective that excites me.

What makes you an effective tutor?

I strive to vary my teaching style to meet the learning needs of individual students. I have received high-performance reviews for my ability to creatively make complex topics manageable. My strategic and energetic approach to teaching allows me to establish rapport with my students quickly. The combination of my unique approach as an instructor, and experience working with students college preparation have made me a strategic and effective tutor. Most importantly, I care about every aspect of my students’ well being and have a personal investment in their success in academia and life.

What does it cost to work with you?

I aim to provide exceptional value by identifying and addressing the real issue(s) from the beginning.

Once you get in touch, I can recommend a specific course of action for you and we can discuss package options.

ANDREA RYAN

Tutor and Coach; Founder

I began tutoring at James Madison University where I graduated with a double major in English and Arabic. After college I worked at a refugee center with  immigrants and their children. Teaching everything from ESL to life-skills in classes, filled with various ages and skill levels, challenged me to refine and evolve my style.

Over the past 5 years I have been tutoring professionally in Richmond, Virginia. I also work with Catholic Commonwealth Charities in the Refugee Resettlement Department, where I volunteer my tutoring services, as well as translation and ESL skills, and at at Saint Mary’s Catholic School tutoring classes after school.

Through my experience as a tutor, I developed a multifaceted approach to teaching and learning; a style that is adaptable and uniquely catered to each individual personality. My students discover their true motivations for further education, create meaning and purpose for their academic work, and set clear and measurable goals. They see the potential of their education, not in an isolated sense, but as a tool to empower and design their lives.

My methods and strategies have proved successful, with SAT score increases from 200 -400 points and scholarships to universities such as Duke, NYU and Yale.

Success Stories

Testimonials of Satisfied Students

From application deadlines to finding scholarships to meet my financial needs, she was there for it all. It can be stressful and confusing trying to figure out what to do next or how to figure out what to do with my life, but working with Andrea, I learned to focus first on what motivates me and then take action and I feel like I have my life and education in my own hands. Along with everything else that goes along with preparing for college, Andrea also tutored me in SAT prep and she gave me the tools I needed to look at the test in a strategic and analytical way and my score improved by 400 points!

Ivana Wade

My experience with Andrea was the most helpful and worthwhile experience of any I have ever had with a tutor. She makes you feel so smart and gives you the guidance and skills to solve your own problems. We worked together on a senior thesis paper I was struggling with. We did not just jump into writing the paper which I liked. We talked about it brainstormed and then began. With Andrea's guidance and help, I received an A on the hardest paper I had to do in my college career. Without her I would have not passed.

Kristin Gobbi

Thank you for the SAT tutoring that you provided me. On my first SAT test, Iscored a 470 on the Critical Reading section. After Andrea's tutoring, I scored a 600 on that section and was accepted into the school of my choice. Thank you so much for your time and effort.

Katie Kuley

Andrea was a unique tutor in that she helped me find my own passions and motivations so that I could then find the right college for me. Once we identified what characteristics I was looking for in a College, she mapped out a strategy to get me there.
